Great looking. Great Playing. High Quality. World renowned manufacturer. Brand New. With New Case. New Mouthpiece. All at a fantastic price.

Why get a laying around the garage/closet used horn of unknown quality and unknown hidden condition which may generate more repair bills then any savings when you can buy this brand new higher end horn for just a few dollars more? No reason to "rent to own" at an inflated List price...and when you're done you spent more money for the lowest end student horn then this Intermediate/semi-pro horn.

This is a US Kanstul (Anaheim California) made B flat Lacquer TRUMPET. A BESSON 709. This is considered an Intermediate to Semi-Professional Horn. We'll discuss this trumpet more later....but first let's go into why you're even looking at this listing.

If you're new to musical instruments and worried about not making a right decision...DO NOT HESITATE to e-mail with questions...I'll see if I can help you out. I played for 8 years through college and beyond and now collect trumpets as a hobby...I'm eager to see the success of all music students and helping get the right instrument in the student's hand is part of this success. Of course there's a lot of land mines out there, most are of the "I wish I knew that when I started out" variety.

If you're looking to avoid paying a year or two of "rent to own", just for the joy of paying a marked up retail price on a low end student trumpet. this should be your horn.

Quality Level: Considered an Intermediate to Semi-Pro horn.

Who made the horn and where?
There are many trumpets out there that are sold under the name of an American manufacturer, but are made overseas...especially in the student lines. This horn carries a British/French manufacturer's name, however it is made in one of the top US manufacturer's factory .Kanstul of Anaheim California (just down the street from Disneyland, and yes. Disneyland uses tons of this company's horns). The company president of Kanstul has been building and designing brass instruments since 1952. He's considered one of the best in the world. http://www.kanstul.com/images1/zigkanstulstory.pdf

It is rare to find a new Kanstul horn for under $1000...and many of their horns are sold under other names in the $3000 range, There's really no concept of a "student" horn from the Kanstul line.

So what's the advantage of this trumpet:

  1.  It's brand new, which is a cool thing for a student player, plus if properly cared for, will last for years more.

  2. It's NOT an "e-bay special" New horns selling on e-bay are notorious for looking good in the picture and have lots of problems. They are referred to on trumpet discussion boards as TSOs (Trumpet Shaped Objects). Again this is a US made horn by a top US manufacturer.

  3. It has a light weight case which will sure make it easier to take home and practice.

  4.  Spare parts: While you hate to think of repairing a new horn, accidents do occur and springs and pads wear out. Since this horn is made by Kanstul...Parts are available through Kanstul. Try getting spare parts for an e-bay special.

  5.  There is NO reason this horn can't take a Jr. High Schooler all the way through college. (Many players after a few years elect to get a "professional horn" after playing through Jr. High. You of course really need to compare this to the "professional horn" to make sure the pro horn is that much better...which it might not be. Given that though, the Jr. High horn...becomes the "Marching Band Horn" because Marching Band is considered a higher physical risk of damage.

Disadvantage of this horn:

Since this is a PURCHASED horn, you need to treat it as the valued instrument that you've purchased. You need to wipe it down after playing, clean the insides on a regular basis, don't play while eating or soon after eating, keep it oiled and the slides lubed. You need to protect it from dents by making sure it's IN THE CASE when you're not holding it.

Thanks for reading through the listing and good luck to yours or your child's musical career.

FEEDBACK:

Fred,
Well it has been 2 weeks now that I have had the Besson 709.  I am using it 100% now, but still in the "check out" period.  I can honestly say that I like it and it plays great.  The upper register is not too much different from my Schilke, but the in staff notes have more edge and it slots well.  The intonation is great, and it projects well.
One of the trumpet players I play with in a Big Band played it last night for a couple charts, and wants (said he would) to order one.  I sent him all the info.; his  name is Jack Brown, just so you will know when he orders.
Also,  another trumpet player has a Kanstul built (LA) Benge*, he played the horn and he and I both thought it sounded almost identical to his Benge, and he said it blows as freely and as concise as his Benge.
All in all, I like the horn, and plan on using it...............
Just a little trick that you might be interested in, I use pieces of clear packaging tape, cut to size, on all the spots on the horn where fingers wrap around the valve casing, touch the bell, etc.  You can't see the tape, and it prevents wear of lacquer, or silver.  It does not hurt the finish, cannot be seen, and is replaceable when it starts to peal off.  I have had my Schilke** (silver), and a lacquer Flugel Horn for 20+ years and have used tape on them both, and neither have any finish wear.  This was suggested to me long ago by a brass service repair person - works great.

Thanks, and take care.

I have had my Besson 709 for about 2 weeks.  The day it came, I immediately practiced on it for an hour and was amazed at how much tighter the construction of the horn felt in my hands compared to  my Yamaha, which cost twice as much.  The tone is beautiful, rich and mellow.  I find that it slots much more easily than the Yamaha did, and the valve action is precise and quick.         This horn is a steal at this price.  It is, as my trumpet teacher said, as close to a professional sounding horn as you can for so little money.  And, the fact that it's made by Kanstul is the key.   Check out the Kanstul website and you can see how carefully these horns are built.   Right now, I can't imagine playing on any other horn.

* Note that Mr. Kanstul worked for Benge, basically the fellow in charge of converting brass to brass instruments, during the 70's before starting his own company.   So these Benge horns are considered as "Made by Kanstul" or EARLY LA Benge or PRE-UMI Benge.

** Schilke is considered as a long time premier manufacturer of trumpets and now trombones...these horn go for $1500+ USED.
